STMicroelectronics and Smart Eye have collaborated to develop a driver monitoring system (DMS) with a high-sensitivity single LED light source.
ST and Smart Eye develop a 1-LED Driver Monitoring System
Smart Eye and STMicroelectronics recently unveiled a driver monitoring system (DMS) with a high-sensitivity single LED light source at AutoSens and Incabin in Brussels. This outstanding DMS product not only helps to improve driving safety, but also reduces power consumption and system cost.
Existing driving monitoring systems usually require two or more LED light sources to fully meet the driver's lighting needs. The new DMS system launched this time only needs one LED to meet the illumination requirements of the system. It integrates STMicroelectronics' high-sensitivity automotive global shutter image sensor VB56G4A and Smart Eye's accumulated expertise in driving monitoring algorithms and optical system design.

Eric Aussedat, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Business Unit at STMicroelectronics, said: "The superior performance and high sensitivity of ST's automotive-grade global shutter image sensors complement Smart Eye's industry-proven driving monitoring algorithms. In developing a 2.6 On the way to a sensor with micron pixels, double the quantum efficiency of the previous generation, we have simplified DMS development, reduced power consumption, and reduced cost without sacrificing performance."
About VB56G4A
The VB56G4A is ST's second-generation automotive-grade global shutter image sensor, using 3D stacked backside illuminated (BSI-3D) image sensor manufacturing technology.
The sensor has a high quantum efficiency (QE) of 24% at 940nm near-infrared (NIR) wavelength and a linear dynamic range of up to 60dB. A simple low-power LED invisible light-emitting tube can provide sufficient illumination for the sensor . Shooting outside the visible spectrum also ensures that the system responds equally quickly during day or night driving, and in bright or cloudy conditions, while minimizing potential drowsy driving issues.
The global shutter is a one-time exposure of all pixels at the same time, which is very simple to synchronize with the NIR light source, thereby reducing the power budget of the light source subsystem.
The sensor also offers flexible operating modes that help optimize system characteristics and performance. Operating modes include programmable 4-frame context sequence, lighting control output synchronized with sensor integration time, and external frame start signal input. Other features include automatic dark calibration, dynamic defect pixel correction, image cropping and mirror/flip image readout.
About Smart Eye
Smart Eye is a global leader in in-vehicle sensing artificial intelligence and driver monitoring system (DMS) software for the automotive industry, developing technologies to understand, support and predict human behavior in complex environments.
At AutoSens Brussels, Smart Eye also demonstrated an in-vehicle sensing technology in cooperation with OmniVision, a next-generation in-vehicle sensing solution that meets GSR and Euro NCAP requirements. The solution integrates Smart Eye's world-leading in-vehicle AI algorithms and OmniVision's next-generation RGB-IR BSI Global Shutter (GS) sensors for in-vehicle and occupant monitoring systems (IMS and OMS).
