Renesas Acquire Reality AI to Augment Endpoint AI Capability

Jun 13 2022

Renesas Electronics will acquire Reality Analytics, Inc. (Reality AI) of Columbia, Maryland, a leading provider of embedded AI solutions. The acquisition will in all-cash transaction and has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. It is expected to close by the end of the year 2022.

With the increasing demand for data in the industrial IoT, consumer and automotive product sectors, the importance of embedding artificial intelligence in products has become increasingly prominent. This embedded application, based on intelligent decision-making based on machine learning, is physically closer to the data source, requiring low latency and high security.

Renesas indicated that the acquisition will enhance its internal capability on endpoint AI to provide more flexibility and efficiency for system developers and make their products ready for the Artificial Intelligence of Things.

The Acquisition will Enhance Renesas' Capability on Endpoint AI

Reality AI is a developer of artificial intelligence tools focusing on sensors and signals. Based on its advanced technology, it offers a wide range of embedded AI and Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) solutions for advanced non-visual sensing in automotive, industrial and commercial products. They provide cash-in-the-box signal processing algorithms for machine learning and provide fast, efficient machine learning inference that fits into the smallest Microcontrollers.

In addition, Reality has established a partnership with Infineon and Tier 1 auto suppliers for Automotive SWS. It features AI-built sensors for industrial anomaly detection and car voice recognition. It allows the car to see around corners with sound as a supplement to ADAS and collision avoidance systems based on camera, lidar, and radar.

Renesas combines Reality AI's technology into its MCU and MPU products with state-of-the-art AI inference and signal processing capabilities, helping to seamlessly apply advanced machine learning and signal processing to complex problems.

The acquisition of Reality AI, in addition to expanding embedded AI technology, key IP, software, and tools, brings in experts to create an AloT Development Center of Excellence in Maryland. It will further strengthen Renesas' position as the preeminent AloT solutions provider.

Reality AI and Renesas already have a foundation of cooperation, and this acquisition drives the application of machine learning in the industrial Internet of Things, consumer electronics, and automotive. It also provides customers with highly customized solutions, including embedded machine learning, signal processing, high-performance processors, as well as hardware integration and solution development assistance.
